More Able Pupils
At Swanmore College we recognise that some pupils display exceptional ability or talent in certain areas, whether in academic subjects, creative arts, sports, or other fields. Our mission is to ensure that all pupils, including those who are able or talented, are challenged, nurtured, and given opportunities to achieve their full potential.
At Swanmore College we use Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) taken on entry to the school to help identify our More Able cohort. Teacher recommendations are also made by subject areas, and the curriculum is differentiated to enable all pupils to be challenged at the highest level on a day-to-day basis.
Through our curricular and extra-curricular programmes, pupils who are identified as More Able will experience targeted enrichment opportunities.
Wednesday Enrichment
We aim to offer More Able pupils opportunities to experience success beyond the classroom environment. Examples of Enrichment activities which will enable More Able pupils to flourish are:
- 1st4Sport Level 1 Award – Coaching Assistant (Physical Education)
- Duke of Edinburgh Award
- Dance Live (Dance)
- Bronze Arts Award (Art)
- Ancient Civilisations (History)
- Spanish GCSE – Accelerated Course (MFL)
- French GCSE – Accelerated Course (MFL)
- Young Philosopher’s Club (RE)
- Law
- Environmental Leaders Programme (Science)
- Debate

Clubs
In addition to the above opportunities, the following clubs are offered which would enhance the learning of More Able Pupils.
- Politics Club – Run every Thursday lunchtime by the history department
- Umbrella Drama/Dance – Pupils audition for these groups at the beginning of the academic year and are a select group who perform at events and attend trips with the College.
